Eureka Watch - Our Luciano

JIMMY Rattray is waiting for the phone to ring.

Rattray, who won two Inter Dominion finals at Menangle with the great Beautide, thinks his emerging four-year-old Our Luciano is an ideal horse for the $2.1 million TAB Eureka at Menangle on September 6.

He looked every bit of it with a narrow but impressive win in last Saturday night’s Kevin Thomas 4YO at Albion Park.

Next stop is this Saturday night’s $53,400 Group 3 Wolf Signs 4YO Championship at Albion Park.

“Whoever is looking for a runner for their Eureka slot, this is your horse,” Rattray said. “It showed how far he’s come to do a bit of work and still win like that last week.

“He just keeps taking the next step.

“The TAB Eureka will be a perfect race for him. He’s fast, can do some work now and he’s getting off the gate better each time now, too.

“We’ve got one more race here, then it’s home to aim at the Eureka.”

Our Luciano, a $13 shot, overhauled $1.90 favourite The Janitor to snatch victory last Saturday night by a half neck in a slick 1min54.1sec mile rate for 2138m.

It was his ninth win from just 31 starts and his third in just nine starts since joining Rattray’s stable.

“All credit goes to Keith (Cotchin). He had him and I suggested he send him up to have a crack at the Chariots Of Fire,” Rattray said.

“Keith wasn’t sure if he had enough of a preparation, but he won the Paleface Adios and then drew the outside but still ran fourth in the Chariots.

“He’s a better horse now than he was then.”

Our Luciano will be part of a big night for Rattray at Albion Park on Saturday. He also has London To A Brick in the $500,000 Inter Dominion trotting final.

"It could get even bigger if Nyack can sneak into the pacing final. He's first emergency," Rattray said.
